4 Ways Your Company Can Help Its Community

As millennials and Gen Zs grow older, our society as a whole is becoming more socially conscious, and we see more companies reaching out to help their communities.

It makes sense. Socially conscious companies tend to attract and retain young talent more effectively. They also enjoy significant tax advantages through charitable contributions, and customers tend to favor businesses that demonstrate a genuine community commitment. But for us, it boils down to doing what’s right.

For example, at 1895 Films, we work to enrich the TV and film community by providing opportunities for students. Our Internship Program – a collaboration with Kent State University – provides immersive experiences to college students interested in digital media production, journalism, and related fields. In addition, our executive producer Tom Jennings teaches a KSU study abroad class in Florence, Italy, every year.

Of course, there are obvious benefits for our business, not the least of which is helping to shape the next generation of filmmakers and strengthening our industry. But the bottom line for us? It’s just the right thing to do. It makes us better as people and members of our community.

So what can your business do to reach out and help your community? Here are a few ideas:

Get Employees Involved

Involve your employees in the decision-making process for charitable efforts. Let them choose the causes they are passionate about, increasing their emotional connection to the company's philanthropic endeavors. One way to do this is to offer paid time off for employees to volunteer individually or as a team. This allows them to support causes close to their hearts and reinforces your company's commitment to community service.

Connect with Students

Engage with the future workforce by visiting local schools. Share insights about your industry, your company's work, and career opportunities. Inspiring students not only creates future talent but also strengthens community ties. Likewise, you can invite students to visit your business. Open your doors for educational tours or internships. This exposure can provide invaluable learning experiences, contribute to students’ skill development, and lead to future employment opportunities.

Donate

Consider various forms of donations, from financial contributions to sponsoring local sports teams or providing pro bono services to nonprofits. You can also run campaigns that tie charitable contributions to your product sales. For instance, donate a portion of each sale to a worthy cause or pledge to provide a product for every item sold. This approach benefits both your business and the community. Setting up a donation match program also works well. Choose a charity aligned with your business’s values and offer to match your employees’ or customers’ donations up to a predetermined limit.

Assist Disaster Victims

Disaster-stricken communities need help fast. Have plans ready to offer your company’s products and services in times of need. For example, law firms can provide free legal advice to victims of natural disasters, restaurants can contribute emergency meals. As a business owner, consider how your core services can make a positive impact.

By integrating good deeds into your work, you acknowledge that businesses have a role to play in building better communities. At a time when social consciousness is on the rise, businesses that lead with compassion and a commitment to their communities are not only thriving, but shaping a brighter future for all of us.
